Pneumology

As a branch of internal medicine, pneumology (pulmonary medicine) deals with the diseases of the lungs and respiratory organs, including the prevention, detection and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the lungs, bronchi and pleura.

The goal of pulmonology is to prevent, detect and treat diseases of the lungs and airways to improve lung function and enhance patient quality of life. These include both acute and chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer. Diagnosis is usually made via a detailed history and physical examination, supplemented by imaging techniques such as X-ray or CT, as well as pulmonary function tests and, if necessary, bronchoscopy. The therapy depends on the diagnosis and the severity of the disease. Both drug and non-drug treatments are used here.

Another important aspect of pneumology is prevention. The aim here is to avoid or reduce risk factors for respiratory diseases – for example by refraining from smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and protecting against harmful environmental influences.
