Rheumatology

The umbrella term “rheumatism” has historically been used to refer to all joint diseases and pain in the locomotor system. The field of rheumatology comprises over 400 different disorders that can be found in almost every age group. Some people continue to believe the myth that rheumatism is an annoying, mostly harmless disease that occurs only in old age. In fact, however, it involves various partly localised, partly generalised non-inflammatory and inflammatory disorders of the locomotor system, which in the worst case can also be life-threatening.
Today’s diagnostic options make it possible to distinguish between inflammatory and non-inflammatory, degenerative and metabolic diseases at an early stage. As a result of the complexity of rheumatic diseases, there are many overlaps with other areas of medicine such as conservative and surgical orthopaedics, cardiology and pulmonology, neurology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, angiology and dermatology.
Early recognition of specific disease patterns and the systematic implementation of guideline-oriented multimodal therapy approaches with the various medical specialities aims to ensure optimal prevention of potentially permanent damage with a holistic consideration of the human body.
